Temari (手まり) balls are a folk art form and Japanese craft, originating in China and introduced to Japan around the 7th century A.D. Temari means "hand ball" in Japanese. Balls made from embroidery may be used in handball games and other such similar games (hacky sack). An accessory similar in appearance (and constructed with similar techniques and materials), but with the addition of a hand-strap (made with either satin cord or ribbon) and a tassel, can serve as an accessory for a kimono, as a kimono bag.

Supplies will be provided for first timers during the first session and are enough for approximately 3 balls. A new pattern will be introduced in each class. You can start any time and if you have to skip a class, you can work on the ball next in your sequence. We may not complete the ball in class. This is especially true as the balls get more complex. Instructions provided will allow the student to complete the project on their own time and all steps will be reviewed prior to the conclusion of each session.

Meet the Instructor: Becki Collins

Becki was first introduced to temari by her grandmother many years ago and it was love at first stich. Fast forward many years, she was reintroduced to it in Tokyo. From there she began taking formal lessons learning many patterns and receiving certifications from the Japan Temari Association by progressing through the formal curriculum. When not stitching a temari (which is rare) Becki also enjoys knitting, cross stitch and ikebana. She has previously taught in elementary school and also led jewelry making classes.
