Bonseki

Bonseki is a traditional Japanese art form dating back over a thousand years, in which miniature landscapes are created on a black lacquered tray using white sand, pebbles, and small stones. Inspired by the natural beauty of mountains, rivers, and coastlines, these delicate compositions capture the essence of nature in a breathtaking, small-scale scene. At this workshop, guests will have the wonderful opportunity to craft their very own bonseki tray, arranging sand and stones to bring their personal vision of a serene landscape to life. No experience necessary, just a sense of curiosity and creativity!

Meet the instructor

Sara Linden is a bonseki artist and instructor based in Colorado. Working within a formal Japanese lineage tradition in the Kyoto Bonseki Yachio-kai (京都盆石八千代会) under the instruction of school director Maeda Keijin, she creates ephemeral landscapes using sand and stone that invite deeper observation, focused attention, and reflection on impermanence and seasonality. Her broader practice includes study in Omotesenke tea and Ikenobo ikebana, which help inform her approach to contemplative aesthetics. Her workshops combine traditional technique with contemplative engagement and have been presented through institutions including the Denver Art Museum and RedLine Contemporary Art Center.
